Lieutenant Colonel Randy S. Herd, United States Air Force (Retired), is the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) at Bob Jones High School.  He has been the SASI at BJHS since the AFJROTC unit was started in 2003. He served on active duty in the Air Force for over 24 years.  A South Carolina native, he has an undergraduate degree in mathematics (with an emphasis in secondary education) from Presbyterian College and a Master's Degree in Information and Computer Science from Georgia Tech.  He also is a graduate of the Air Force's Squadron Officers School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College.  He served in assignments in Texas, Mississippi, New York, Georgia, Colorado, Iceland, Nebraska, and Virginia.  His assignments included work with air defense radars, AF computer systems & local area networks, space-based missile early warning satellites, nuclear command and control, and unmanned aerial vehicle video transmission.  Lt Col Herd also served for two years as Commander of the 344th Recruiting Squadron, Arlington, Texas.   He earned the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal (four oak leaf clusters) and the Air Force Commendation Medal.  He also was awarded the AF Scientific Achievement Award and holds a US patent for a radar cruise missile detection system.
